Interview

How did you get to your instrument?
When I heard Elvis on the radio for the first time at the age of 8, it awakened my enthusiasm for rock music. By the time I was 10, I had finally convinced my parents to buy me a guitar and sign me up for lessons.

What fascinates you about your instrument?
As a polyphonic instrument, the guitar allows you to play polyphonically and create complex harmonies. At the same time, it is also possible to play in a very expressive way, as the player can intervene directly in the sound production and thus modulate the tone very precisely.

What has helped you the most when practising?
I tried to write my own songs right from the start. It's this songwriter's and composer's perspective that later allowed me to better understand why something is played (or written) this way or that way when it came to learning new pieces and hearing phrasing from recordings. I believe that it is important not only to make music as a performer. Only if you also write music yourself can you develop an inner understanding of music.

What do you pay particular attention to when teaching?
I treat every student as a budding musician. This means that he or she wants to learn to express themselves in a new way with the help of the instrument. It is important to me to take into account the wishes, interests and concerns of each student on their individual path. I also emphasise the development of a strong sense of rhythm and musical ear training.

What has been your greatest experience as a musician so far?
For me, it has always been moments of exceptional creativity or beauty during the songwriting process or improvisation that have stood out as particularly precious.

On which equipment do you prefer to play?
I mainly play Les Pauls, but I also like to pick up a Strat from time to time. For my rather complex effects rig, I mainly use a Line 6 Helix. This signal is then fed stereo into two clean guitar amps. Acoustically, I like to play nylon guitars from Hanika.

What else is important in your life besides music?
My wife and my two sons. I also love photography.
